Axolithophyllum was named by Fomichev (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: C Bash-l C Step-u]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Geyerophyllidae by Hill (1981), Rodriguez and Bamber (2012).
