Cervus matheronis was named by Gervais (1859).

It was recombined as Pliocervus matheronis by Hilzheimer (1922); it was recombined as Ctenocerus matheroni by Kretzoi (1941); it was recombined as Ctenocervus matheroni by Kretzoi (1968); it was recombined as Capreolus matheronis by Hamilton (1978).
