Taxonomy
Gomphotherium elegans was named by Hay (1916). Its type specimen is USNM 8255 and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Tetralophodon elegans by Osborn (1936), Frye and Hibbard (1941); it was considered a nomen dubium by Hibbard (1952).
