Microaltingia apocarpela was named by Zhou et al. (2001) [Fig. 3. The fossil specimens are stored in the L. H. Bailey Hortorium Paleobotanical Collection of Cornell University (CUPC).]. Its type specimen is CUPC 1062. It is the type species of Microaltingia.
