Taxonomy
Cardiodon was named by Owen (1841). Its type is Cardiodon rugulosus.
It was synonymized subjectively with Cetiosaurus by Dollo (1889), Zittel (1890), Nopcsa (1901), Huene (1908), Huene (1909), von Zittel (1911), Romer (1956), Tatarinov (1964), Romer (1966), Steel (1970), Swinton (1970); it was considered a nomen dubium by McIntosh (1990).
It was assigned to Crocodilia by Owen (1841); to Sauropoda by Winkler (1893); to Sauropoda by Marsh (1895); to Cardiodontidae by Marsh (1896), Marsh (1898), Sauvage (1900), Sauvage (1906); to Cetiosaurinae by Kuhn (1939); to Cetiosauridae by Delair (1973); and to Eusauropoda by Upchurch et al. (2004), Naish and Martill (2007).
