Dorudontidae was named by Miller (1923). It is not extant. Its type is Dorudon. It was considered paraphyletic by Uhen (2008).

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Basilosauridae by Uhen (2013); it was reranked as the subfamily Dorudontinae by Slijper (1936), Fordyce (1982), Barnes et al. (1985), Fordyce and Barnes (1994), Fordyce et al. M. D. Uhen 2008Dorudontines share the derived characteristics of members of the Basilosauridae, but lack elongate posterior thoracic, lumbar, and anterior caudal vertebrae. Dorudontine genera are very similar to one another, but each has a few autapomorphies that differentiate them.
