Taxonomy

Sipalocyon was named by Ameghino (1887). It is not extant. Its type is Sipalocyon gracilis.

It was assigned to Creodonta by Ameghino (1891); to Amphiproviverridae by Ameghino (1894); to Hathliacyninae by Marshall (1978); to Hathlyacyninae by Marshall (1981); to Borhyaenidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Hathliacynidae by de Muizon (1994), de Muizon (1999) and Goin et al. (2007).

Synonyms

Amphithereutes was named by Ameghino (1935).

It was synonymized subjectively with Sipalocyon by Marshall (1978) and Marshall (1981).
Thylacodictis was named by Mercerat (1891).

It was synonymized subjectively with Sipalocyon by Marshall (1978) and Marshall (1981).
Protoproviverra was named by Ameghino (1891) [not Creodonta of Lemoine 1981: 379]. Its type is Proviverra palaeonictides.

It was replaced with Amphiproviverra by Ameghino (1894); it was synonymized subjectively with Prototomus by Van Valen (1967); it was synonymized subjectively with Sipalocyon by Marshall (1981).

It was assigned to Thylacynidae by Ameghino (1891).
Amphiproviverra was named by Ameghino (1891). It is the type genus of Amphoproviverridae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Sipalocyon by Marshall (1981).

It was assigned to Dasyuridae by Lydekker (1894); and to Amphiproviverridae by Ameghino (1894).
