Taxonomy

Polydolopinae was named by Ameghino (1897). Its type is Polydolops. It was considered monophyletic by Marshall (1982).

It was assigned to Polydolopidae by Pascual and Bond (1981), Marshall (1982), Woodburne and Zinsmeister (1984), Flynn and Wyss (1999).

Bond 1981	Dientes superiores anteriores al P3 desconocidos; P3 menos hipertrofiado que en los Epidolopinae y más comprimidos lateralmente; M1 de corona cortante (Polydolops) o cuadrangulares o multicuspidados, generalmente con 3 cúspulas labiales; M4 multicuspidados, más reducidos que los anteriores, pero menos que en los Epidolopinae, o aparentemente agrandados (Eudolops). Aparentemente sólo un incisivo inferior, procumbente; dientes entre el incisivo y el p2 aparentemente ausentes; p2 semejante al de los Epidolopinae; p3 cortante, desde muy hipertrofiado (Polydolops) hasta menos hipertrofiado (Eudolops); m1-3 multicuspidados y con el trigónido y el talónido desvanecidos; parte anterior del m1 más acuminado y elevada hacia el p3 que en los Epidolopinae; m2-3 generalmente con el trigónido a dos cúspides externas y una interna; m4 ausente.
