Brontornis was named by Moreno and Mercerat (1891).
It was assigned to Brontornithinae by Alvarenga and Holfing (2003), Gould and Quitmyer (2005), Bertelli et al. (2007); to Anseriformes by Degrange et al. (2012), Buffetaut (2014), Degrange et al. (2015); and to Brontornithidae by Moreno and Mercerat (1891), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1960), Mourer-Chauviré (1981), Tambussi et al. (2023).
