Hunanophrentis was named by Sun (1958) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-u Sepkoski's reference number: 174,680]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Disphyllinae by Hill (1981); to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Charactophyllidae by Abbasi et al. (2014).
