Taxonomy
Spinophyllum was named by Wedekind (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give-l D Fras]. It is not extant. Its type is Campophyllum spongiosum.

It was synonymized subjectively with Cylindrophyllum by Hill (1956).

It was assigned to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); to Disphyllinae by Hill (1981) and Brownlaw and Jell (2008); to Charactophyllidae by Abbasi et al. (2014); and to Disphyllidae by Coen-Aubert (2017).
