Taxonomy
Geniohyus major was named by Andrews (1904). Its type specimen is CGM 8980 and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Bunohyrax major by Matsumoto (1926), Rasmussen and Simons (1988), Rasmussen and Gutiérrez (2010).
