Crocodylinae was named by Cuvier (1807). It is extant.

It was corrected as Crocodilinae by Kuhn (1946) and Persson (1960); it was misspelled as Crocodilinae by Mook (1962), Estes (1964), Kuhn (1966), Estes and Berberian (1970), Estes (1976), Efimov (1982) and Willis (1993); it was reranked as the unranked clade Crocodylinae by Rio and Mannion (2021).

It was assigned to Crocodilidae by Kuhn (1946), Persson (1960) and Mook (1962); to Crocodylidae by Estes (1964), Kuhn (1966), Estes and Berberian (1970), Estes (1976), Efimov (1982) and Willis (1993); and to Crocodylidae by Rio and Mannion (2021).
