Taxonomy
Balaenodon lintianus was named by Meyer (1849) [Type specimen is in the Oberosterreichisches Landesmuseum, Linz/Donau, Austria.]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Linz, which is in a Chattian open shallow subtidal sandstone in the Linzer Sanden Formation of Austria.
It was recombined as Stenodon lentianus by Van Beneden (1865); it was recombined as Cetotheriopsis linziana by Brandt (1871), Brandt (1872), Brandt (1873), Brandt (1874); it was recombined as Aulocetus lentianus by Van Beneden (1875), Roger (1887), Capellini (1899); it was synonymized subjectively with Squalodon ehrlichii by Trouessart (1898); it was synonymized subjectively with Aulocetus molassicus by Trouessart (1904); it was synonymized subjectively with Patriocetus denggi by Abel (1914), Kellogg (1923); it was misspelled as Balaenodon lentianus by Scott (1873); it was recombined as Cetotheriopsis lintianus by Kellogg (1931), Abel (1938), Sanders and Barnes (2002), Bisconti (2006), Boessenecker and Fordyce (2017).
