Bathyergus was named by Illiger (1811). It is extant. It is the type genus of Bathyergidae.

It was assigned to Murina by Illiger (1811); to Aspalacina by Gray (1825); and to Bathyergidae by Honeycutt et al. (1987), Pickford and Senut (1997).
