Pyrochroidae was named by Latreille (1807). It is extant. Its type is Pyrochroa.

It was assigned to Heteromera by Crowson (1981); and to Tenebrionoidea by Lawrence and Newton (1995), Bouchard et al. (2011), Bukejs et al. (2019), Cai et al. (2022).
