Proroziphius macrops was named by Leidy (1876) [No type specimen is listed in Leidy 1876: it is not apparent in ANSP or USNM collections. The type specimen was figured by Leidy (1877; plate 32, figures 1, 2).

It was synonymized subjectively with Mesoplodon longirostris by Abel (1905); it was recombined as Choneziphius macrops by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904), Lambert (2005) and Bianucci et al. (2013).
