Taxonomy
Archaeocetus was named by Sinzow (1898) [Replacement name for Pachypleurus Brandt 1873, which is preoccupied by Pachypleura White, 1853, a genus of Coleoptera.].

It was synonymized subjectively with Pristinocetus by Trouessart (1898); it was synonymized subjectively with Lissodelphis by McKenna and Bell (1997).

It was assigned to Mysticeti by Sinzow (1898); to Delphinidae by Palmer (1904); to Balaenopterinae by Trouessart (1904); and to Cetacea by Obada (2019).
