Portlockiellidae was named by Batten (1956). Its type is Portlockiella.
It was assigned to Pleurotomariacea by Knight et al. (1960); to Vetigastropoda by Heidelberger and Koch (2005); to Pleurotomarioidea by Golikov and Starobogatov (1975), Bouchet et al. (2005), Karapunar and Nützel (2022); and to Eotomarioidea by Wagner (2023).
