Taxonomy
Bucaniellinae was named by Koken and Perner (1925) [ranked by Knight, Cox, Batten & Yochelson 1960 (ref# 10229)]. Its type is Bucanella.

It was corrected as Bucanellinae by Knight et al. (1960), Frýda (1999); it was reranked as the family Bucanellidae by Starobogatov (1970), Wahlman (1992), Bouchet et al. (2005), Bouchet et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Bellerophontidae by Koken and Perner (1925); to Sinuitopsida by Starobogatov (1970); to Bellerophontacea by Wahlman (1992); to Sinuitidae by Knight et al. (1960), Frýda (1999); and to Bellerophontoidea by Bouchet et al. (2005), Bouchet et al. (2017).
