Caroloameghinidae was named by Ameghino (1901). Its type is Caroloameghinia.

It was reranked as the subfamily Caroloameghiniinae by Crochet and Sigé (1993); it was corrected as Caroloameghiniidae by Ameghino (1901), Simpson (1948), Aplin and Archer (1987), Goin et al. (2010) and Oliveira and Goin (2011).

It was assigned to Protungulata by Ameghino (1901); to Marsupialia by Simpson (1948); to Caroloameghinioidea by Aplin and Archer (1987); to Peradectidae by Crochet and Sigé (1993); and to Peradectoidea by Goin et al. (2010) and Oliveira and Goin (2011).
