Onthophagus was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Onthophagidae.
It was assigned to Coprini by Statz (1952); to Scarabaeidae by Zhang (1989); to Scarabaeinae by Britton (1960), Krell (2000); and to Onthophagini by Bouchard et al. (2011), Tarasov et al. (2016), Philips (2016).
