Taxonomy

Geotrupes was named by Latreille (1796). It is extant.

It was assigned to Coleoptera by Latreille (1796); to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1798); to Geotrupini by Latreille (1802); to Scarabaeidae by Meunier (1921); to Geotrupidae by Zhang (1989); to Geotrupinae by Krell (2000); and to Geotrupini by Statz (1952) and Bouchard et al. (2011).

Synonyms

Obitiscarabaeus was named by Hong (1984). It is not extant. Its type is Obitiscarabaeus jiaoyanshanense.

It was synonymized subjectively with Geotrupes by Krell (2000).

It was assigned to Scarabaeoidea by Hong (1984).
