Taxonomy
Arctocephalus (Hydrarctos) lomasiensis was named by Muizon (1978) [No type specimen number is listed by Muizon (1978).]. Its type specimen is no number, a skull (skull and jaw with teeth), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sacaco (SAO horizon), which is in a Tortonian/Messinian paralic siltstone in the Pisco Formation of Peru.
It was recombined as Arctocephalus lomasiensis by Pilleri (1990); it was recombined as Hydrarctos lomasiensis by Berta and Deméré (1986), Deméré et al. (2003), Koretsky and Barnes (2006), Berta et al. (2018).
