Ichneumia was named by Geoffroy (1837). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Herpestes by Mivart (1882).

It was assigned to Herpestinae by Taylor (1972); and to Herpestidae by Geraads (1997), Werdelin and Peigne (2010).

Synonyms
  • Herpestes was named by Cuvier (1829) [non Illliger 1811]. It is extant.

    It was replaced with Ichneumia by Geoffroy (1837), Taylor (1972).
