Taxonomy
Messiphoca mauretanica was named by Muizon (1981) [No type specimen number is listed by Muizon (1981).]. Its type specimen is ORN 1, a partial skeleton (humerus, radius, ulna, vertebrae), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Raz-el-Ain, which is in a Messinian marine horizon in the Raz-el-Ain Formation of Algeria.
