Taxonomy

Poraniidae was named by Perrier (1893). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Gale (1987) and Mah and Blake (2012).

It was assigned to Leptognathina by Spencer and Wright (1966) and Hess (1972); to Spinulosida by Gale (2011); to Valvatacea by Mah and Blake (2012); and to Valvatida by Perrier (1893), Gale (1987), Blake (1989) and Blake et al. (2017).
