Hexaprotodon bruneti was named by Boisserie and White (2004). Its type specimen is BOU-VP-8/79, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Middle Awash - Bouri, which is in the Pleistocene/Holocene of horizon Ethiopia.
