Ommatophoca rossii was named by Gray (1844). It is extant.

It was recombined as Stenorhynchus rossii by Scott (1873); it was corrected as Ommatophoca rossi by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904), Friant (1947), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Riedman (1990), Rice (1998), Cullen et al. (2014).
