Bellerophon elegans was named by de Ferrusac and d'Orbigny (1840) [d’Orbigny in de Ferrusac & d’Orbigny 1840]. It is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Bucania elegans by de Koninck (1883); it was recombined as Bucaniopsis elegans by Weir (1931); it was recombined as Retispira elegans by Rollins et al. (1971), Heidelberger (2001) and Wagner (2023).
