Taxonomy
Phoca wymani was named by Leidy (1854) [Dewaele (PBDB 65695) states that the holotype is MCZ 8741, left and right temporal bones, originally assigned to Phoca wymani by Leidy [62], ‘Tertiary’, Richmond, Virginia, USA.]. Its type specimen is ANSP 11225, a set of teeth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is State Penitentiary, which is in a Serravallian coastal sandstone in the Calvert Formation of Virginia.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Monachinae by Dewaele et al. (2018) and Berta et al. (2022); it was recombined as Monotherium wymani by Koretsky (2001), Deméré et al. (2003), Berta et al. (2015) and Rule and Park (2024).
