Gadila was named by Gray (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: K l R]. It is extant. Its type is Dentalium gadus.

It was reranked as Cadulus (Gadila) by Gardner (1947) and Jung (1965).

It was assigned to Cadulus by Gardner (1947) and Jung (1965); to Siphonodentaliidae by Wienrich (1999); to Gadilidae by Wells and Houston (2001); to Scaphopoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gadilinae by Reynolds and Steiner (2008).
