Taxonomy

Delphinus frontalis was named by Cuvier (1829). It is extant. Its type locality is Boa Vista, which is in a Holocene coastal horizon in Cape Verde.

It was recombined as Stenella frontalis by Fraser (1950), Sherman (1952), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Hershkovitz (1966), Rice (1998), Perrin (2002), Mead and Brownell (2005), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008), Perrin et al. (2013) and Jefferson (2021).

Synonyms

Delphinus froenatus was named by Cuvier (1836). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Stenella frontalis by Perrin (2002), Mead and Brownell (2005) and Jefferson (2021).
Delphinus (Delphinorhynchus) pernettensis was named by Blainville (1817) [Name based on dolphin described and figured by Pernetty (1764). No type specimen designated (Hershkovitz, 1966).]. It is extant.

It was corrected as Delphinus (Delphinorhynchus) pernettyi by Desmarest (1820); it was replaced with Stenella frontalis by Mead and Brownell (2005).
Delphinus plagiodon was named by Cope (1866). It is extant.

It was recombined as Prodelphinus plagiodon by Trouessart (1904); it was recombined as Stenella plagiodon by Sherman (1952) and Scheffer and Rice (1963); it was synonymized subjectively with Delphinus pernettensis by Hershkovitz (1966); it was synonymized subjectively with Stenella frontalis by Perrin (2002) and Jefferson (2021).
Delphinus doris was named by Gray (1846). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Delphinus euphrosyne by Nilsson (1847); it was recombined as Clymene doris by Gray (1866); it was recombined as Tursio doris by Gray (1866); it was recombined as Clymenia doris by Gray (1868) and Gray (1871); it was synonymized subjectively with Stenella frontalis by Hershkovitz (1966), Perrin (2002), Mead and Brownell (2005) and Jefferson (2021).
Delphinus frenatus was named by Gray (1846). It is extant.

It was recombined as Tursio frenatus by Gray (1866); it was recombined as Prodelphinus frenatus by Trouessart (1904); it was synonymized subjectively with Stenella frontalis by Hershkovitz (1966).
