Taxonomy

Delphinus longirostris was named by Gray (1828) [Type locality unknown (Hershkovitz, 1966).]. It is extant. Its type specimen is Leiden Museum, a skull.

It was recombined as Prodelphinus longirostris by Trouessart (1904); it was synonymized subjectively with Pomatodelphis stenorhynchus by Allen (1921); it was recombined as Stenella longirostris by Gray (1828), Iredale and Troughton (1934), Sherman (1952), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Hershkovitz (1966), Lal Mohan (1988), Vidal (1991), Perrin (1998), Rice (1998), Mead and Brownell (2005), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008), Perrin et al. (2013) and Jefferson (2021).

Synonyms

Delphinus roseiventris was named by Wagner (1846). It is extant.

It was recombined as Steno roseiventris by Gray (1866) and Scott (1873); it was synonymized subjectively with Stenella longirostris by Hershkovitz (1966), Perrin (1998) and Jefferson (2021).
Delphinus alope was named by Gray (1850). It is extant.

It was recombined as Clymene alope by Gray (1866); it was recombined as Clymenia alope by Gray (1868) and Gray (1871); it was synonymized subjectively with Stenella longirostris by Hershkovitz (1966), Perrin (1998) and Jefferson (2021).
Delphinus stenorhynchus was named by Gray (1866). It is extant.

It was recombined as Clymenia stenorhynchus by Gray (1868); it was synonymized subjectively with Stenella longirostris by Perrin (1998) and Jefferson (2021).
Delphinus microps was named by Gray (1846). It is extant.
