Taxonomy
Bucanella was named by Meek (1871) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 362]. Its type is Bucanella nana. It is the type genus of Bucaniellinae.

It was corrected as Bucaniella by Fischer (1885), Pitcher (1939); it was reranked as Plectonotus (Bucaniella) by Clarke (1913).

It was assigned to Protowarthiidae by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); to Plectonotus by Clarke (1913); to Bucaniellinae by Koken and Perner (1925); to Bellerophontacea by Fischer (1885), Pitcher (1939); to Bucaniellidae by Knight et al. (1960); to Bucaniinae by HornĂ½ (1963); to Bellerophontida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bucanellidae by Starobogatov (1970), Wahlman (1992), Bouchet et al. (2005).
