Anas perspicillata was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type specimen is 1.

It was recombined as Oidemia perspicillata by Hay (1930); it was recombined as Melanitta (Pelionetta) perspicillata by Wetmore (1940); it was recombined as Melanitta perspicillata by Miller and DeMay (1942), Wetmore (1956), Howard (1963), Guthrie (1992), Olson and Rasmussen (2001), Broughton (2004) and Clements et al. (2017).
