Ardea americana was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type specimen is 1.

It was recombined as Grus americanus by Hay (1930); it was recombined as Grus americana by Wetmore (1931), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), Wetmore (1956), Wetmore (1962), Campbell (1995), Olson and Rasmussen (2001), del Hoyo et al. (2014) and Clements et al. (2017).
