Hippopotamus minor was named by Desmarest (1822). It is not extant. Its type specimen is 1.

It was recombined as Hippopotamus (Tetraprotodon) minor by Falconer and Cautley (1836); it was recombined as Phanourios minor by Boekschoten and Sonndar (1972).
