Hyphantosoma was named by Dall (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l T Plio Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant. Its type is Cytherea carbasea.

It was reranked as Pitaria (Hyphantosoma) by Palmer (1927); it was reranked as Pitar (Hyphantosoma) by Woodring (1982), Todd (2001).

It was assigned to Pitaria by Palmer (1927); to Pitar by Woodring (1982), Todd (2001); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
