Oligopithecinae was named by Simons (1989). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Kay et al. (2004).

It was reranked as the family Oligopithecidae by Kay et al. (2004).

It was assigned to Propliopithecidae by Simons (1989); and to Anthropoidea by Beard et al. (1994), Kay et al. (2004).
