Taxonomy
Strophostylus was named by Hall (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-m C Mosc Sepkoski's reference number: 362,797]. Its type is Strophostylus andrewsi.

It was reranked as Platyceras (Strophostylus) by Barrois (1889).

It was assigned to Platyceras by Barrois (1889); to Trochonematidae by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); to Strophostylidae by Grabau and Shimer (1909); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Platyceratidae by Knight et al. (1960), Bouchet et al. (2005).
