It was synonymized subjectively with Ornithocheiridae by Unwin (2001), Unwin and Martill (2007); it was reranked as the unranked clade Anhangueridae by Rodrigues and Kellner (2008), Rodrigues and Kellner (2013), Richards et al. (2023).
It was assigned to Pterodactyloidea by Campos and Kellner (1985), Wang and Zhou (2006); to Pterodactyloidea by Rodrigues and Kellner (2008); to Ornithocheiroidea by Headden and Campos (2014); to Pteranodontoidea by Bantim et al. (2014), Aureliano et al. (2014); and to Anhangueria by Rodrigues and Kellner (2013), Holgado and Pegas (2020), Richards et al. (2023), Pentland et al. (2024).
