Taxonomy
Venus cribraria was named by Conrad (1843) [DISTRIBUTION: Early-Late Pliocene; Virginia-South Carolina.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Dione (Chamelea) cribraria by Conrad (1863); it was recombined as Chione (Chione) cribraria by Palmer (1926) and Gardner (1943); it was recombined as Chione cribrarius by DuBar (1971); it was recombined as Chione cribraria by Holmes (1860), Dall (1903) and Hendy et al. (2008).
