Proteopithecus was named by Simons (1989). Its type is Proteopithecus sylviae. It is the type genus of Proteopithecidae.
It was assigned to Oligopithecinae by Simons (1989); to Anthropoidea by Gunnell and Miller (2001); and to Proteopithecidae by Simons (1997), Simons et al. (1999), Seiffert et al. (2005).
