Grypoceras was named by Hyatt (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 2,524,995].

It was assigned to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Grypoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Pérez-Valera et al. (2016).
