Taxonomy
Comptichnus moorosi was named by Ellenberger (1970). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Maphutseng II tracksite (zone A/4), which is in a Norian/Rhaetian terrestrial sandstone/claystone in the Elliot Formation of Lesotho. It is the type species of Comptichnus.
It was corrected as Comptichnus moorosii by Ellenberger (1972); it was misspelled as Comptichnus moorosii by Olsen and Galton (1984); it was considered a nomen dubium by Klein and Lucas (2021).

| P. Ellenberger 1972 | Les pieds arrondis, festonnés (4 doigts régulièrement espacés et sortant à peine à l'avant de la sole pédieuse) classent notre espèce dans le genre Comptichnus Hitchcock. Mais l'étude plus poussée de la main amènerait peut-être à le classer ailleurs (voir à la discussion, plus bas).
- PES: Longueur du pied, 95 mm (du doigt l, 50 mm ; de Il, 35 mm ; de Ill, 45 mm ; de IV, 36 mm ; de V, ? mm ; projection de III en avant du bout des doigts latéraux, 24 mm). Largeur du pied entre l'extrémité des doigts latéraux, 105 mm. Divarication totale II-IV, 90°, I-II, 30° (II-III, 20°; III-IV, 40°). Les coussinets de phalanges sont englobés dans la sole plantaire sauf les derniers bien apparents. L'arrière du pied,en y comprenant l'empreinte des métatarses,se révèle bien marqué, mais raccourci et arrondi. La marque du "talon" n'est qu'amorcée. C'est bien le Ve doigt qui manque si l'on se fie aux recherches de Haubold (p. 60 ss), touchant Comptichnus. - MANUS: Longueur de la "main", 50 mm (sous toutes réserves),; projection de III en avant du bout des doigts latéraux, 15 mm? Largeur de la main entre I et IV: 50 mm. Divarication totale? (La main plus petite, plus allongée, moins arrondie, semble avoir les doigts un peu plus serrés que pour le pied. - Mais il faudrait dégager davantage de piste). - PISTE: Enjambée, 1,48 m (Pas = 0,74 m), Ped, angulatio, ? Manus angulation: ?. Ecartement, ?: la démarche est mal connue, mais paraît rapide et assez rectiligne. |
