Tarphyceras was named by Hyatt (1894) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Ashg-l Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Tarphyceras prematurum.

It was assigned to Tarphyceratidae by Ulrich et al. (1942), Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981) and Evans (2011).
