Altiocculus was named by Sundberg (1994) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1089]. Its type is Altiocculus drumensis. It is the type genus of Altiocculinae.

It was assigned to Altiocculinae by Sundberg (1994); to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Alokistocaridae by Jell and Adrain (2002).

Sundberg 1994Large, micropvgous Altiocculinae with cranidium with typically moderate length (20- 30% glabellar length), posteriorly set, elevated pal- pebral lobes; strongly downsloping anterior area of fixigena; very strongly tapered glabella; median swelling posterior of anterior border furrow; no deep pits in anterior border furrow; secondary preoccipital lobes; narrow posterior area of fixi- genae (15-30% glabellar length); coarse granular
ornamentation. Pygidium subelliptical; transversely elongate; narrow, level border; moderately to moderately weak convex anterior pleural bands; strongly convex posterior pleural bands.
