Taxonomy
Cephalotes maya was named by de Andrade (1999). Its type specimen is Poinar Mex. 2.1, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Mexican amber (Poinar coll), which is in a Miocene terrestrial amber in Mexico.
