Taxonomy
Ciconia mycteria was named by Lichtenstein (1819). It is extant. It is the type species of Jabiru.

It was recombined as Jabiru mycteria by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1931), Wetmore (1940), Clements et al. (2017).

Synonyms
  • Jabiru weillsi was named by Sellards (1916). Its type specimen is USNM V 9712, a limb element (humerus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Vero, which is in a Pleistocene channel sandstone/sandstone in Florida.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Jabiru mycteria by Wetmore (1931), Lambrecht (1933).
